How do dermal fillers work?

Voluma, Juvéderm, Restylane and Belotero Balance are made with hyaluronic acid, a substance that occurs naturally in our body and helps skin retain moisture, volume, and nutrients. These hyaluronic acid fillers add volume and diminish wrinkles. They are carefully injected under the skin to fill out the soft tissue of the dermis.

Radiesse® is comprised of tiny microspheres that plump up the skin and smooth away lines and wrinkles. After your injection, you will see immediate improvement. The initial volume you see is from the gel carrier that is used to introduce the microspheres to the area. Over the next two months, your body will gradually absorb and remove the gel carrier as your own body responds and begins to make new collagen.

Sculptra also works with your body to produce your own new collagen. Injections are usually repeated three times over a three- to six-month period and can last two to three years.  Although you can see immediate results, the solution is gradually absorbed over seven to ten days. At that time, the fullness is gone—but patients generally start to see an improvement in the skin’s radiance as soon as two weeks following treatment. The full effect is visible in one to two months.

How long until I see results from my dermal filler treatment?

With hyaluronic acid fillers, the results are immediate.

Radiesse also has immediate results. As the gel carrier is slowly absorbed by the body, you will gradually produce your own collagen. The full benefit of Radiesse can be seen at two months.

The initial fullness after Sculptra treatment gradually subsides over seven to ten days. Full results from each treatment can be seen after one to two months. Subsequent treatments are usually repeated three to four times every eight weeks for optimal, lasting results.

How long will my injectable filler treatment last?

Depending on the area treated and which filler is used, results can last from three months to two years.

Are there any side effects of facial filler treatments?

Patients may experience temporary side effects, including bruising, redness, or swelling at the injection site. These side effects typically dissipate over the next few days.  Bring a list of your medications and allergies to review with your healthcare provider. If you are taking any aspirin, ibuprofen, Aleve, prescription blood thinners, fish oil, or vitamin E, these can increase your risk of bruising.

Are facial fillers painful?

Dermal fillers are generally well tolerated. Our office will take every precaution, including topical anesthetics, to ensure your treatment is as comfortable as possible.

How much downtime should I expect?

With little to no downtime, you should be able to resume most normal activities immediately following treatment. It is best to avoid intense exercise and alcohol for 24 to 48 hours post treatment, as these increase your risk for bruising and swelling.
